Aston Villa vs Manchester United – Premier League Preview & Predicted Line-ups

0 6

Mid-table Aston Villa will entertain second-placed Manchester United at Villa Park in an exciting Premier League match-up on Sunday.

Despite going down 3-2 at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday, United coasted past Roma in their Europa League semi-final tie thanks to a 6-2 first-leg win at Old Trafford.

Fresh from securing a place in the final, the Red Devils are looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League following a bore draw at Leeds United in their most recent league match.

The upcoming game against a Villa side they have not lost to in any of their last 16 top-flight meetings is a prime opportunity for United to do that.

Aston Villa Preview

Anwar El-Ghazi’s 80th-minute strike nudged Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park last time out, ending a run of three Premier League matches without a win (D1, L2).

The hosts are now chasing back-to-back top-flight triumphs for the first time since December 2020, although they head into the meeting winless in their last 12 league games against the teams from the top two (D3, L9).

High scoring has been a common theme in Villa’s recent league fixtures as each of the last five has seen over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet.

However, Villa have failed to win five of their last six home Premier League games (D2, L3), conceding precisely twice per match on four occasions in that period.

Going back to 1995, Villa are winless in 21 successive home Premier League encounters with United (D7, L14), drawing a blank in three of the last four (D1, L3).

Manchester United Preview

The Red Devils have suffered just one reverse in their last 27 Premier League outings (W17, D9), having racked up a 13-game unbeaten league streak (W7, D6) since a 2-1 home loss to Sheffield United in January.

Coming into this matchday, United are the only team yet to taste defeat away from home this Premier League campaign (W10, D7).

Bringing the 2019/20 season into the equation, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have not lost any of their last 24 away league fixtures (W15, D9) and are only three short of tying Arsenal’s all-time record in the top-flight.

Even if they concede first, the visitors should have enough character to bounce back, having rescued by far the most away Premier League points so far this term (25).

Notably, United have yet to lose a competitive match against Villa in the 21st century (W14, D7).

Predicted Line-ups

Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Emiliano Martinez, Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Matt Targett, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn, Bertrand Traore, Ross Barkley, Anwar El Ghazi, Ollie Watkins.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay, Fred, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani.
