Three key traits see Mourinho backed for Roma success

0 3

Alessandro Florenzi is confident that Jose Mourinho can bring the good times back to the Stadio Olimpico next season when he takes over as manager of Roma.

Mourinho, 58, was not out of football for too long after being sacked by Tottenham on April 19. The Portuguese tactician was named as Paulo Fonseca’s successor earlier this week and will begin work in the summer. He will inherit a team struggling to keep pace with the Serie A big boys.

Roma currently sit seventh in the Italian top-flight standings. They are 27 points behind Inter Milan who have already been crowned champions after a superb campaign.

Mourinho has already enjoyed a taste of Italian football. He was in charge of Inter between June 2008 and May 2010.

And it was a successful spell, with the Nerazzurri winning back-to-back titles plus the Champions League. The former Chelsea and Manchester United chief also lifted the Coppa Italia before leaving to join Real Madrid.

It remains to be seen if he will have the same impact in the country second time around. But Florenzi, currently on loan with Paris Saint-Germain from Roma, feels he has the attributes to succeed.

“It’s a breath of fresh air for everyone, Mourinho may be one of the coaches with the most experience and personality,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport. “One that will be able to control the Roman environment, I hope he can do well.”

And the Italy international would love to see the Scudetto back in Rome. “As a fan, I hope so,” he added. “So that I can go to the Circo Massimo to celebrate.”

Florenzi unsure on Roma return

Florenzi, 30, spent the second half of the 2019-2020 season on loan with Valencia. He was then sent to the Parc des Princes in September 2020 and has made 33 appearances in all competitions for PSG.

The right-back is under contract with Roma until 2023 but has been linked with a move to Inter in the summer. However, he is content to see out his time in Paris and just see where it takes him next.

“It’s nice to be linked with a top club like Inter, but I do not get distracted by rumours or what the media say,” he added. “I want the football to do the talking. I am living this experience with PSG intensely, without too much talking.

“I want to repay the trust of President Al Khelaifi, [PSG sporting director] Leonardo and [manager Mauricio] Pochettino, who still believes in me. I want to give my best, then we’ll see.”
