Have you herd? Elmer’s coming to town

Maidstone United are delighted to be working with Heart of Kent Hospice during their 30th anniversary year.

The popular charity are marking the occasion with a stunning public art event this summer, which will see a herd of elephants arrive in Kent’s county town!

Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade will bring David McKee’s popular children’s character to life. From Saturday 19 June to Sunday 22 August, a herd of fabulously colourful and unique elephants will take you on a trial around Maidstone. We’re hoping that there might even be a football themed Elmer!

Club chief executive Bill Williams said: “Our best wishes to everyone at Heart of Kent Hospice during this anniversary year and thanks for the three decades of care and support that so many local families have benefitted from.

“I know Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade was postponed last year due to the pandemic but it couldn’t be more timely now. What a wonderful way to mark 30 years, raise some much-needed funds for the charity and bring visitors to our town after months of lockdown.

“We look forward to working with the hospice to spread the word about the Parade, as well as seeing the sculptures that our friends at Gallagher Group have chosen and sponsored.”

The trail has encouraged a stampede of companies, schools, public sector organisations, tourist sites and community groups to become involved. 51 full-sized sculptures have been sponsored by local companies and public sector organisations and 30 baby Elmers have been adopted by local schools and community groups.

Cheri Strudwick, Head of Supporter Development at Heart of Kent Hospice, said: “We are so excited to welcome Elmer’s Big Heart of Kent Parade to Maidstone. This free outdoor trail will provide a much-needed boost to everyone’s wellbeing and the economy.

“This is the perfect opportunity for everyone to get outside and have some fun while discovering the huge range of Elmer designs created by some incredibly talented artists.”

As a local charity independent of the NHS, Heart of Kent Hospice’s services cost £5 million to run, with over £4 million raised through the generosity of the local community.

Fundraising was significantly impacted. All 14 of their shops were forced to close at various stages throughout the year and most fundraising events were cancelled. Through it all, their colleagues and volunteers have been on the frontline, supporting terminally ill people, their carers, families and other healthcare professionals in the local area.

Keep up to date with all things Elmer on the website and via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
