Sounders injury updates: Fredy Montero likely back, Josh Atencio maybe not

Sounders are being cautious with Atencio’s quad injury.

Fredy Montero has not played since Week 1 after apparently injury his quad during a post-game training session. But after being deemed fit enough to at least make the bench last week, he’ll likely feature in Sunday’s match against the Portland Timbers.

“He should be back this coming week in terms of being able to participate,” Sounders GM Garth Lagerwey said during Tuesday’s episode of Sounders Weekly.

The news was not quite as good for Josh Atencio, who failed a fitness test ahead of last week’s game against the LA Galaxy. He injured his right quad during Friday’s training session and the medical staff seems inclined to play it safe as the Sounders enter a particularly busy portion of their schedule.

“We’re not sure exactly,” Lagerwey said about Atencio. “Definitely, he has an injury, he has a quad strain. We’ll continue to evaluate that and see how he recovers. Wouldn’t want to say on [Tuesday] ahead of a three-game week what his participation could be. We’ll give him as much time to recover as we can, but there is an issue there.”
