Hasenhuttl pinpoints vital thing Southampton are ‘missing’

0 5

Ralph Hasenhuttl said that Southampton were simply “not good enough” defensively in their loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Southampton have endured something of a slump in recent months. They have lost several points from winning positions and their trip to Tottenham was the latest example. They took the lead through Danny Ings but Spurs completed a comeback to win 2-1.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup at the weekend, it capped off a disappointing few days for Hasenhuttl.

He disputed the idea that they were less energetic than they had been in their match against Leicester. However, he acknowledged that they need to get better.

Hasenhuttl told Match of the Day: “Can’t say we had less energy than on Sunday. We still had a good game but better today with the ball.

“We had a clearer plan and we had more movement and more chances. First half we had chances for three goals and scored one.

“Not enough to score one goal because we always concede one. Clean sheets are missing. The way we defended was not good enough.”

Things became harder for Southampton when goalscorer Ings went off just before the hour-mark.

Hasenhuttl admitted it was tough to replace their talisman and also raised a question about the penalty that led to Tottenham’s winner.

He added: “We have eight substitutes and normally should be able to replace him [Danny Ings]. But today we couldn’t really push our game with the subs and the opponents were stronger and we were under pressure and making that stupid foul leading to the penalty then it’s too easy for them.

“If it’s a foul it was a penalty. But I have seen the same thing in first half in the middle of the pitch and we didn’t get a foul.

“I don’t want to discuss because we have to accept it. It’s hard to take but we have to.”

Mason reacts to match

While there were disappointing emotions for Hasenhuttl, it was the opposite for Tottenham interim head coach Ryan Mason.

Mason got off to a winning start in the hotseat and explained the qualities shown by his players that ensured that was the case.

He told Sky Sports: “I thought it was fantastic.

“I’m so proud of the boys – so much energy, so much bravery, especially after the first 20-30 minutes.

“We found it difficult at times but the guys showed belief, they stuck to the plan and full credit to them. I thought there was only one team going to win it.

“I think tonight was important for many reasons – a change of manager, a lot has gone on at the club in the last 48 hours. It was important to get back to winning ways.”
