Scout confident player will ‘score goals’ after his performance at Spurs this season

0 8

Luis Neves, the scout who discovered Carlos Vinicius and took him to Portugal is confident that the striker will score plenty of goals for Benfica next season should he return from his loan spell at Tottenham.

Opportunities have been hard to come by for Vinicius this season but the striker has not let Jose Mourinho down when he has been given the chance to play.

The Brazilian has found the back of the net on ten occasions this campaign and boasts of an excellent goals-to-games ratio, even though most of his goals have come in cup competitions against sub-par opposition.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Tottenham have decided not to take up the option to sign the 26-year-old on a permanent basis for £36m at the end of the season and will instead look to sign another striker this summer to serve as Harry Kane’s back up.

The Portuguese media seem to be suggesting that it will be to Benfica’s benefit if Vinicius returns to his parent club next season, with Neves believing that the striker will thrive under Jorge Jesus.

The scout told said in an interview to Record: “Vinicius is tremendously aggressive, especially against centre-backs, when he’s the other way around; he’s quick to attack from depth; he hits hard on goal; he has midfield qualities there; he’s very strong in looking for the ball.

“Jesus is, for me, the best coach within the four lines of our country. I have a tremendous admiration for him. But attention, he’s very demanding, if a player doesn’t give the best… for some reason he had scored goals in the previous season and didn’t stay for this current one.”

“It’s also certain that there’s no one better than Jesus to polish this player, to give him even more shine and to make him a better player than what he already is. Jesus will make him score goals. If Jesus wants, we have another Vinicius in a year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Vinicius certainly appears to have a goalscorer’s instinct, he has looked a little short of quality when he has come up against Premier League opposition. However, the Brazilian has demonstrated with his performances in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions this season why he finished as the top scorer in the Portuguese league last season. That seems to be the ideal level for him to thrive in.
