Paper Talk: Levy given harsh reality check as Spurs goalkeeper hunt takes twist
Tottenham receive a reality check in their hunt to sign a new goalkeeper, while Man Utd are quoted £17million for a striker target – both in all the latest Paper Talk.
SPURS GIVEN GOALKEEPER REALITY CHECK
Tottenham will have to pay significantly more than previously thought in their attempts to sign Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, according to a report.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is wary that 34-year-old Hugo Lloris’ contract expires next summer. However, the club do not expect to keep the Frenchman and are therefore looking for successors.
The north London club have eyes on Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, who has reportedly become frustrated at his lack of action as No. 2 behind the under-fire David de Gea.
What’s more, Clarets stopper Pope is on their radar. The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday that Spurs are looking into a £30million deal for the England international.
According to Lancs Live, however, Burnley would look for a fee in the region of £50million for the 28-year-old.
Pope only signed a new contract in 2019, which expires in the summer of 2023. Burnley can also trigger a 12-month extension option in the deal.
What’s more, Pope will be in England’s squad for Euro 2020 if he avoids fitness problems and he has provided fierce competition to Jordan Pickford for the No. 1 spot.
As such, those factors combined mean that Burnley – who are not willing to sell anyway – would only accept a sizeable increase on Spurs’ initial valuation if they did choose to let him go.
Lancs Live adds that Burnley proved their resistance to transfer raids for their top players with James Tarkowski last summer.
The centre-back received numerous bids from West Ham, but Sean Dyche’s side stood firm. As such, Dyche believes that his club’s public image over their best talents has changed.
