Petro lose, Chiefs held at home in CAF Champions League

Angola’s Petro Atletico suffered a second successive African Champions League defeat, putting them on the verge of an early exit while Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa were held to a draw at home.

Tuesday’s matches in the continent’s top club competition did not prove a happy hunting ground for Cosafa teams as Petro were beaten at home by Wydad Casablanca of Morocco while Chiefs drew 0-0 in Johannesburg with Horoya of Guinea.

Ayoub El Kaabi squandered a chance with a first half penalty but redeemed himself with the 71st minute winner at Luanda’s November 11 Stadium as Wydad won 1-0.

Petro had lost their opening game in Group C at Horoya of Guinea and are now in deep peril in the group.

Chiefs were supposed to play Wydad in their group opener but that was postponed, so Tuesday’s clash against Horoya at Soccer City marked their debut in the group phase of the Champions League.

Failure to score must be considered two points dropped by Chiefs, who now travel to Burkina Faso where they will meet Wydad on Saturday. The game has been moved to a neutral venue after Morocco authorities did not issue Chiefs’ squad visa over fears of the COVID-19 virus.

The Confederation of African Football have also ordered that Tuesday’s postponed game in Group B between Algeria’s Chabab Belouizdad and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa be played on Saturday in Tanzania.

Algerian authorities also refused to allow Sundowns to travel to their country.
