At midday on Tuesday, Arsenal confirmed 18-year-old Alex Kirk has signed his first professional contract with the club. The centre-back has mostly appeared for the u18s this season, but he’s also stepped up to play his first three games for the u23s.

Arsenal club staff have clearly taken notice of Kirk’s progress, making him captain of the u18 side in recent matches. Now, he has his first pro deal, committing his future.

It hasn’t been easy to get games in defence for the u23s this season, with Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers using the matches for their rehabilitation, whilst William Saliba and Sokratis Papastathopoulos also dropped down to get minutes.

Kirk will likely see his opportunities increase in the second half of the campaign, with Sokratis and Saliba likely leaving whilst Mari is back in the first-team squad. Chambers’ situation remains a bit of a mystery, for now, but he probably won’t be in the u23s either.

Regardless, it’s great to see a hard-working young professional like Kirk seeing his performances rewarded with a new deal. Congratulations to him and we wish him good luck for the rest of the season!
