Video: Wayne Bridge explains why former Spurs winger was his hardest opponent

0 2

Wayne Bridge has revealed that former Tottenham winger, Aaron Lennon was one of the toughest opponents he came up against in his career.

Lennon spent nine and a half years at White Hart Lane after joining from Leeds United in the summer of 2005.

At his peak, he was one of the most electrifying wingers in the Premier League and regularly made the England squad.

However, his career petered out in recent years as he failed to make the expected impact at Everton and Burnley after leaving Tottenham in 2015.

Bridge admitted to Sky Sports that the 33-year-old, who now plays for Turkish side Kayserispor, was the hardest player he faced, along with Sean Wright-Phillips, due to his low centre of gravity, size, and speed.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is nice to see Lennon getting the credit he deserves as he is underappreciated, even by a lot of Spurs fans. The winger was practically unplayable for a few years and our game plan would often involve just getting the ball to him and letting him beat his man.

Since Lennon was a classic winger, his decline started when 4-4-2 started going out of fashion. I believe the 33-year-old had enough defensive awareness to be converted into a full-back just as the likes of Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Victor Moses were. That would have probably prolonged his career at the top level.
