Ed Woodward to remain ‘cautious’ in transfer spending due to COVID-19: Report

As Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to revamp his side by the next summer, another challenge has been thrown his way.

According to reports, Solksjaer has identified three areas – a striker, a central defender and a defensive midfielder – in which he wants to invest.

But while the club is happy with Solskjaer’s progress with the team and his decision-making, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward still plans to remain cautious about spending due to the COVID-19 crisis.

According to a report from ESPN, Woodward has already conveyed to Solskjaer and his staff that he will continue to be judicious with the club money due to the pandemic.

This may be a big blow to United’s aspirations of bringing in some dynamic young talent such as Erling Braut Haaland from Borussia Dortmund who has a reported release clause of €75 million.

United have also shown interest in Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish and West Ham defensive midfielder Declan Rice, who both are expected to be in a similar price range.

This has been one constant criticism that Woodward has faced over the past few seasons. His unwillingness to spend club money on buying big players left United playing the first half of the previous season without any specialist strikers.

It was also one of the reported reasons for the breakdown between United management and former manager Jose Mourinho who was left frustrated after Woodward refused to invest in players he wanted at Old Trafford.

The fans will hope that Solskjaer can meet his transfer aspirations next season despite the “lack” of funds.
