Paul Merson reveals why Spurs have made him sad compared to Arsenal’s plight

Paul Merson has admitted that he is saddened by how quickly and how far his beloved Arsenal have fallen behind Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham currently sit at the top of the Premier League going into this weekend’s North London derby, while Arsenal are currently languishing in 14th place after a poor start to the season.

The Gunners are currently struggling to score, while their defence has once again started leaking goals over recent weeks.

The roles were usually reversed during Merson’s playing days, with the Gunners usually coming into clashes against Spurs as the overwhelming favourites, while the Lilywhites were a midtable side for the majority of the 1990s.

The pundit admitted that he has been surprised by how moving into a new stadium does not seem to have affected Spurs as much as their North London rivals, and suggested that Tottenham have now moved ahead of the Gunners both on and off the pitch.

The former Arsenal midfielder told Sky Sports: “The saddest thing for me is how far, and how quickly, Arsenal have fallen behind Tottenham. Tottenham have just built one of the best stadiums in the world.

“I thought they were going to be selling players left, right and centre. A bit like Arsenal after they built the Emirates. Every year a star player went.

“Tottenham are spending more money than Arsenal! Tottenham have a team there, and are in that group where they can win the league. You look at Arsenal, and they’re in the group with Leicester, Southampton, Everton, West Ham, a few others.

“People used to say ‘The Arsenal’… ‘How did The Arsenal do today?’ ‘Who have The Arsenal got today?’ That’s gone. They just say Arsenal now. It was such a top club. Some of the teams they’ve had over the years have been phenomenal.
