Report claims Mourinho will hand 23-year-old a first Premier League start against Chelsea

The Daily Mail claim that Jose Mourinho has decided to hand Joe Rodon his first start for Tottenham when they travel to Chelsea this afternoon for a crucial London derby.

Although Mourinho confirmed that Toby Alderweireld’s injury is not as severe as initially feared, the report reiterates that the Belgian will not be fit in time to make the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga got the nod to start Tottenham’s 4-0 win against Ludogorets on Thursday but The Mail suggest that Mourinho will start the Welsh international alongside Eric Dier against Chelsea.

Rodon, 23 has only got a few minutes under his belt since arriving in North London, appearing as a late substitute in the 2-0 win over Manchester City along with the 1-0 win over Burnley last month.

However, the report claims that the former Swansea player has impressed Mourinho in training and has moved ahead of Sanchez in the pecking order.

It is said that the Spurs boss believes the 23-year-old’s height will help Spurs cope with the aerial threat of Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud if Frank Lampard hands one of the two a start, while Rodon’s ability on the ball would enable him to play the long diagonal balls that Mourinho likes to see from his defenders.
