Chester FC V Gateshead - Match Thread #20 - Vanarama National League N

0 4
On the back of two successive away trips we entertain Gateshead at home tomorrow in what will be our first clash back at the Deva in an eternity. I do feel that this encounter will be make or break for us, because if we win then an unbeaten week back after such a long layoff will be deemed as a pleasing return. However, if we fail to record maximum points then I’m afraid no wins in three would be pretty poor, so it is crucial we secure the three points to put pressure on the top seven.

Our last match was on Tuesday night as we drew 2-2 away against Farsley Celtic in what turned out to be a disappointing result. The first half was a really entertaining spectacle as there was plenty of goalmouth action, a few goals, and in the opening stages we played some good stuff too. It only took us five minutes to break the deadlock as George Glendon smashed into an open goal to make it 1-0 to us. We were only in front for a matter of three minutes though, as Will Hayhurst swept in for Farsley Celtic to make it 1-1. Towards the half hour mark Farsley Celtic turned the game on its head, as James Spencer capitalised on a Louis Gray shocker to make it 2-1 to the hosts. However, we got onto level terms before the break as Paddy Lacey headed home from a well-worked corner to make it 2-2. Despite us conjuring up a rack of chances, we were frustratingly on level terms at the break. Meanwhile, the second period proved to be the complete opposite to the first, as the match evolved into a turgid, scrappy affair with a lack of goalmouth action. It was Farsley Celtic who went closest to grabbing a winner as James Spencer curled against the crossbar on the 68th minute mark. In the end we had to settle for a point due to our lack of creativity.

Gateshead will be making the journey from Tyne And Wear having had a mixed start to the campaign. The Tynesiders began the season in worrying fashion with Mike Williamson’s side losing three of their first four matches, but as we speak the visitors are now in a rich vein of form as they will arrive in Cheshire unbeaten in four - with successive home wins against high-flyers Southport and Gloucester City being the standouts. The Heed were handed a slight blow last week though, with former Torquay United man Ruairi Keating (who netted on his debut against us in January) departing, although that news didn’t seem to impact them in their last two games.

We have a dismal record against our North East opponents with us only winning two of our 12 meetings with them, so it’s critical we rectify that tomorrow in what is a game we have to be winning. There’s no excuses for us not recording maximum points either, as our immaculate playing surface will definitely favour our passing game, unlike at Brackley Town and Farsley Celtic where it was much more difficult for us to do that on ploughed fields. Come On You Seals!
