Millwall boss makes Troy Parrott admission after Tottenham loanee’s return to action

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has admitted that he considered handing Troy Parrott a start against Cardiff City and alternatively bringing on the striker at half-time but decided against it as his side were already playing well.

Parrott returned to action after almost two months out with an injury to make his Championship debut against the Welsh club on Saturday.

On the back of winning his second senior cap for the Republic of Ireland during the international break, the striker replaced Millwall’s goalscorer, Matt Smith in the 76th minute at the Den with the Lions leading 1-0 at the time.

Cardiff equalised just three minutes after the Tottenham loanee came on which saw the home side having to settle for a point.

Rowett said that the away side’s equaliser had nothing to do with Parrott coming on and insisted that it was important for the teenager to get minutes under his belt.

The Millwall boss told London News Online after the match: “If we hadn’t have scored just before half-time he probably would have come on at half-time.

“I toyed with starting him but I thought it was a risk too far, too soon. He hadn’t experienced Championship football and I just thought we should give him a flavour of it.

“Because we were winning and because we had a spell where we looked relatively comfortable just before the [Cardiff] goal I didn’t want to change too much because you can lose a bit of energy. I made changes but I don’t think the changes contributed to us conceding a poor goal.

“It was just good to get Troy out there. His performance didn’t really matter too much, it was about getting him out there and getting him through it.”
