Former Scotland and Glasgow Rangers manager Alex McLeish has suggested that Danny Rose failed to complete a move away from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window due to his wage demands.

Rose has been frozen out of Jose Mourinho’s plans in North London after he failed to be handed a squad number for the Premier League campaign and was also left out of the 25-man line-up for the Europa League.

The left back was linked with a number of clubs during the window including Italian outfit Genoa (Sky Sports) while there was also said to be interest from within the Championship with Middlesbrough said to have been keen to take him on loan to the Riverside but the player was not prepared to drop down a division (Daily Mail).

A move failed to materialise for the England international who looks set to be in limbo until the winter transfer window opens in January.

McLeish believes that there are likely to be problems behind the scenes between Rose and the club.

He told Football Insider: “There seem to be underlying issues,”

“I’m only reading between the lines, I’m not au fait with everything that goes on inside Spurs or indeed the players’ minds.

“I’m looking from afar and see the little tittle-tattle that’s maybe developed into something more serious.

“For about a month or two there you thought his time at Spurs was definitely finished, definitely over. The powers that be at Spurs weren’t too fussed about holding onto him.

“I know there was a contentious issue about him there would he be leaving on a free transfer.

“At the end of the day, Danny Rose has to do what’s best for himself. I know that when you’re at a football club that club comes first but Danny will now be at a stage of his life where he has to do what’s best for himself and his family.”
