Arsenal complete signing of Martinez replacement on four-year deal

0 1

Arsenal have announced the signing of goalkeeper Alex Runarsson on a four-year contract from Dijon.

The 25-year-old Iceland international joined the Ligue 1 club in July 2018. He made 13 appearances in all competitions last season.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said on the club website: “We want to create healthy competition for places. We look forward to seeing Alex bring further depth to the goalkeeping position.”

The deal is reported to be worth around £1million and will see Runarsson provide cover for Bernd Leno.

The north London club needed a new stopper after allowing Emiliano Martinez to join Aston Villa.

Runarsson said on the Arsenal website: “I’m just extremely happy, extremely proud, it is a big day for me and my family. I can’t wait to get started.

“It is one of the biggest clubs in the world. They’ve won the Premier League (top division) 13 times, the FA Cup 14 times, it is a huge club and obviously playing in the Premier League as well, it is a win-win situation.

“I know it is going to be a lot of hard work. But I am ready to do everything I can to get the most amount of minutes as possible.”

LAZIO PONDER €15M OFFER FOR ARSENAL DEFENDER

Shkodran Mustafi could have played his last game for Arsenal, as Lazio are reportedly weighing up a bid.

Mustafi has not lived up to expectations at the Emirates Stadium since joining from Valencia in 2016. The arrival of Gabriel Magalhaes and return of William Saliba from a loan spell have pushed him further down the pecking order.

The German defender is now in the final year of his contract, and will not play until October at the earliest due to injury.

Mustafi’s situation has now made him an ideal target for Lazio, who are in the market for a new defender as they look to bolster their squad for a campaign in which they will also have Champions League football to contend with.

According to Corriere Della Sera (via Sport Witness), Mustafi has emerged as their top target for before the transfer window closes. He has an “accessible” price tag and a “sale seems likely”.

Arsenal are holding out for around €15m for the 28-year-old. Lazio are hoping to lower that fee down to somewhere between €10m and €12m. Read more…
