Report: Spurs begin talks to sign Man United midfielder

ESPN claim that Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard before the transfer window closes.

The report reveals that Jose Mourinho is a fan of the attacking midfielder and wants to be reunited with him at Spurs.

The Tottenham boss has reportedly asked Daniel Levy to explore the possibility of signing the midfielder, with talks reportedly already underway between intermediaries.

It is claimed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to see Lingard stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford but that the midfielder is said to have become increasingly disillusioned after falling down the pecking order.

While Lingard does not want to leave his boyhood club, the report reveals that the 27-year-old wants to be playing regularly this season.

Zenit St Petersburg are also said to be interested in snapping up the midfielder, while it is asserted that Spurs are only likely to pursue a deal for Lingard if they find a buyer for Dele Alli.

Spurs Web Opinion

Dele Alli possesses more quality than Lingard does and so it is understandable why Spurs fans are desperate not to sell the 24-year-old. However, Lingard arguably fits our style of play much better than Alli, who would arguably do much better in a possession-based side rather than one that plays on the counter. While I can see the logic behind why Jose might want to replace Alli with Lingard, there are a couple of reasons why I do not expect the deal to happen. I cannot see anyone being willing to pay Levy’s asking price for Alli. Additionally, if it is regular football that Lingard is after, it is clear that he is not going to get that at Spurs.
