Newcastle United squad costings in these four seasons show what expectations should now be

What should this Newcastle United squad be capable of.

What should be the expectations be with Steve Bruce in charge of this 2019/20 Newcastle United squad?

Relegation, survival, mid-table, something better?

As with everything it largely comes down to money and we need to go a little back in time to begin the story.

Four years in fact and the 2015/16 Premier League season.

The table below shows what it cost to assemble each of the 20 PL squads that season…

The 2015/16 Newcastle United squad total cost to assemble (all tables stats via Transfermarkt):

As you can see, an absolute shambles that Mike Ashley brought about that relegation, with his chaotic transfer policy and other shocking decisions, particularly employing Steve McClaren.

Newcastle had the eighth most expensive squad (£180.59m), costing twice as much as the four most cheaply built ones. Relegation should never have happened.

What about 2017/18 after Rafa Benitez won promotion…?

The 2017/18 Newcastle United squad total cost to assemble:

Newcastle had only the fifteenth most expensive squad at £150.55m, so for Rafa Benitez to finish 10th was a very decent achievement and punching well above their weight.

What about a year later?

The 2018/19 Newcastle United squad total cost to assemble:

Newcastle then had the 12th most expensive squad (£180.00m) and finished 13th, that squad still costing less than the 2015/16 one three years earlier. Plus, £20m of that was spent on Almiron over halfway through the season, when you knock that amount off, NUFC then become one of six clubs separated by only £16m from the third cheapest (Wolves £144.38m) up to the £160m squad Newcastle started the season with.

Which then brings us to the current season…

The 2019/20 Newcastle United squad total cost to assemble:

As you can see, Newcastle once again have the 12th most expensive squad in the division BUT the cost of the squad has climbed significantly to £246.22m. Three times what Sheffield United’s cost and almost £140m more than Norwich’s.

This NUFC squad also cost far more than the likes of those at Villa, Burnley and Brighton.

This belated spending in 2019 means that Newcastle United’s expectations shouldn’t be flirting with relegation this time, in my opinion.
