Opinion: I can’t believe Tottenham have handed this player a new contract

Tottenham Hotspur have a number of promising young players coming through the academy, with Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga being my personal favourites.

However, amongst the likes of Skipp, Parrott, Tanganga, Marsh, Roles, White, and more, I do not understand how Anthony Georgiou has been given a new contract.

The Cypriot featured heavily in the pre-season tour this year, filling in at left-back for the games against Juventus and Man United.

However, it did feel as if this was more out of necessity than anything, as Danny Rose had been left at home and Ben Davies was out injured.

Georgiou didn’t look too sharp in defence or attack if you ask me, and Rose stepped straight back in once he was recalled in Germany.

Normally a left-winger, Georgiou has been at Tottenham since 2013, signing his first professional contract in 2017.

However, the midfielder is now 22-years of age and has still only made one appearance for the first team, back in the 2017/18 season (Wikipedia).

Georgiou went out on loan to Levante B last season and only managed 11 appearances and one goal. He has now been sent out on loan for 6-months again, this time to Ipswich Town.

Spurs have also extended his contract until 2021, but I cannot understand why. It doesn’t look as if the player has any hope of breaking into the first-team, or much of a sell-on value.

Does anyone else see anything in this guy?
