The PL are worried about a drop off in quality but I actually think it might improve the quality. Essentially 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th are playing an extra game. This gives a clear advantage to 3rd and 4th, who are already likely to be the better sides. It wouldn't surprise me if more playoff finals are between 3rd and 4th placed teams.
