For some players it would surely be a brilliant option. The only British one I recall is Steve Baines. He was never any great shakes as a player, was never going to win any medals or caps, but had a much better chance of being in the Cup Final or Europe as a ref. Obviously he didn't make either but he came a lot closer than he would have done with a number on his back.
