Olmstead trainees run first and second in Grade 3 race

When favorite Fox News stumbled at the start of the 400-yard Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge, stablemates Aj Fast Corona and Beep Beep Rev Rev took advantage of the misfortune, finishing first and second in the Grade 3 race Thursday at Canterbury Park. Aj Fast Corona and jockey Luis Valenzuela passed Beep Beep Rev Rev under leading rider Armando Alvidrez in the late stages to win by a half length in 20.122 seconds. Five Bar Fantasy finished third. Fox News could not recover from the poor start and finished fourth. Corona a Saint was fifth.

Aj Fast Corona, trained by Jason Olmstead for owners Kim Paulsen and Tom Maher, paid $6.40. The 4-year-old filly earned $18,670 of the $35,904 purse, boosting her career earnings to $119,016. Olmstead also trains Beep Beep Rev Rev and Fox News.

“I just broke loose from the pony, warmed up, realized she was a class act and let her do her thing,” Valenzuela said.

The victory qualifies Aj Fast Corona to the Oct. 26 Grade 1 Cox Ranch Distaff Challenge Championship at Albuquerque Downs.
