Watch crazy 999-1 in-running winner land spoils for lucky backers moments after 100-1 Sedgefield shock

0 6

THIS crazy 999-1 in-running winner proved a shock triumph for lucky backers – while a 100-1 Sedgefield runner capped off a day of monster returns.

Cool and Clever plummeted to rock bottom odds on the Betfair exchange during the 1.30pm contest at Roscommon on Tuesday.

Cool and Clever looked boxed up on the rail before breaking free to land some backers, or backer, a 999-1 winner

Sent off 10-11 favourite, the Jim Bolger-trained two-year-old looked boxed in against the rail approaching the final furlong.

Rival Sunset Shiraz surged forward and looked the likely winner, prompting Cool and Clever’s odds of victory to drop through the floor.

But some canny punters – or punter – somewhere thought the horse still had a chance and it was backed to the tune of £40 at odds of 999-1.

That meant those who got on the win were celebrating a huge-priced outsider when Kevin Manning showed expert skill to work the horse free and power it home.

Sunset Shiraz, a 9-1 chance, lost out by half a length, with third-placed New Star – a 22-1 chance – six lengths further back.

The win was another triumph for trainer Bolger, who shows no signs of slowing down at the age of 79.

He teamed up with son-in-law Manning to land the 2000 Guineas with Poetic Flare at Newmarket earlier this month.

Bolger was represented by daughter Una at Roscommon, who said of Cool and Clever: “We’ll probably step him up to a mile and maybe look for a listed race.

“I’m particularly delighted as he’s owned by my uncle Paddy and aunt Marguerite.

“Paddy hasn’t been so well lately and I’m sure he’ll be looking in on the telly.”

Amazingly, this monster return came just 30 minutes after a 100-1 winner at Sedgefield in the shape of Roma Bangkok.

The Maurice Barnes-trained roughie prevailed by a nose from 7-4 Gordon’s Jet, while evens money favourite Geronimo nine lengths behind in third.

Sedgefield seems the track to land big winners, after two 100-1 shots romped home within a week of each other last November.
