Haydock races go ahead after miraculous work to clear track following late flurry of snow

0 8

TODAY’S racing at Haydock has gone ahead following the miraculous efforts of workers to clear the track after a late flurry of snow.

Clerk of the course Kirkland Tellwright admitted there was ‘a lot to do’ to get the course ready before the first race at 12.55pm.

Snow was seen covering the racecourse this morning

Top trainer Nicky Henderson warned earlier this week of an ‘absolute disaster’ if the meet was cancelled at the last minute.

His superstar horse Buveur D’Air is all primed to make a big return to action after overcoming a horrific injury.

With the meet hanging in the balance just an hour before the first race, the Herculean late efforts of workers to remove the covers meant the action could take place.

The track did pass a second inspection earlier this morning but further snowfall cast it into doubt.

Tellwright said: “It should stop snowing shortly, which it needs to do as the frost covers are very heavy to move with snow on them.

“We should still just scrape through.

“The forecast was for sleet snow and it has settled a bit but it needs to stop doing that pretty soon.

“The ground is fit to race on but there’s a limit to how much snow we can take and then get the covers off the course.

“As things stand we’re going to get there but if it was to snow a lot we’d be stuffed.

“There’s a lot to do.”

ITV Racing host Luke Harvey said the hurdles course is OK but the chase track has ‘quite a bit of snow’ – and early TV footage showed some snow still lying on the ground next to the track.

The big race takes place at 3.15pm – with Templegate providing an ultimate guide to all the action on the box today.
