Ghaiyyath unlikely to head to Arc and likely to join stablemate Pinatubo on plane to Breeders’ Cup

GHAIYYATH is unlikely to head to France for the Arc, trainer Charlie Appleby has confirmed.

After his narrow defeat to Magical in the Irish Champion Stakes, Appleby is likely to give his star more time.

He’s as short as 10-1 for next weekend’s showpiece at Longchamp, but it looks as if Enable and Love will have one less rival to worry about.

The Breeders’ Cup Turf looks his likeliest destination, but he does have the option of running at Ascot on Champions Day.

Appleby said: “To be brutally honest it’s probably more of a negative than a positive at the moment.

“I feel after [Irish] Champions Weekend, after we made that our target and said we’d contemplate the Arc, I think now we’d probably be saying the Arc is an unlikely next start for him.

“He’s put up four big performances, the first three of those were nicely spaced out and the fourth one was probably the quickest he’s backed up.

“The Juddmonte to Ireland was quick. So to say we’d go to the Arc and then to look for another target after that like the Breeders’ Cup would be a big ask for a horse like him who puts in so much.

“So without putting a rubber stamp to it I’d say we’re more likely to be missing the Arc and looking towards the Champions Day or the Breeders’ Cup.”

The Champion Stakes at Ascot could be a thriller with John Gosden’s Mishriff the current 5-2 jolly and Magical – Ghaiyyath’s Irish conqueror last time out – an 11-4 chance.

Ghaiyyath is a 3-1 shot with Betway but Appleby thinks a trip Stateside might be likelier if it comes up soft.

He added: “Conditions will play a part but I have to say the horse has had a quiet week like he always does after a run and this week we’ve been very pleased.

“We’re yet to have proper discussions with his Highness of where we’re going to cement his next target.

“Ascot is a possibility though for sure. We’ve seen what he can do over ten furlongs and we’ve seen what he can do over a mile-and-a-half.

“I feel from the horse’s point of view, he’s done so well over a mile-and-a-quarter that he’s not been pigeonholed but people tend to forget what he can do over a mile-and-a-half.

“We’re in a very lucky position, but it brings the Breeders’ Cup Turf into strong contention.”

Meanwhile Pinatubo could be joining Ghaiyyath on the plane to America with a run in the Breeders’ Cup Mile his likeliest next start.

After Space Blues was ruled out of next weekend’s Group 1 Foret, there was a chance Pinatubo could head to France.

But the US is ‘tailor-made’ for Pinatubo according to his trainer.

He said: “Pinatubo won’t be going to the Foret. He’s having a break after the Moulin.

“All being well we’ve got the two options for him. We’ve got Champions Day and the QEII or the Breeders’ Cup.

“Without having a rubber stamp on it I’d say we’re more looking towards a Breeders’ Cup percentage wise.

“It’s been a race that we’ve all been in agreement for a while that it could be tailor made for him.”
