Will gravel/cx/road all converge on similar tire clearances?

It seems like there are so many places where the pavement is terrible, or being able to tackle multiple surfaces is almost a requirement to get good miles in, that the old skinny tire version of road riding is increasingly difficult to make happen. Not counting text message murderers. Just makes sense that all these dropbar bikes should want to converge into a single format.
