Cotton Bar Tape As Rim Tape

Is there any reason not to use bar tape as rim tape if it fits the rim?
I have some very old cotton bar tape with a very faint stick to it (that I will never use on bars), it fits Modele 58 rims quite well.
I'm going to try it but thought I'd ask if anyone else has tried this.
