What makes a freewheel body 8/9/10 speed

I ordered some new wheels for the winter bike - Shimano RS-500s.
The literature indicates that the rear is 8/9/10/11 speed compatible. We have bikes around here with 3X8 Shimano, 3X9 Shimano, and 2X10 Shimano, so this level of versatility made sense to me.
However, after pushing the "Buy Now"...
