Schwinn Springer rubber bumper replacement?

I noticed today that the rubber bumper ( snubber, bushing) on my Schwinn Phantom springer front end is dry rot. I see that Ebay has replacements for sale but I also saw a brief statement about using a Skateboard Polyurethane skate truck bushing instead. Is this a good idea? Have any of you used...
