26 x 1.50 tires on my Diamond Back ?

I am restoring an old Diamond Back Ascent bike. It has Araya aluminum rims, 26 x 1.75 stamped on the rims.

Can I go to 26 x 1.50 tires ? I want to use it for commuting and would like to have an easier rolling tire than the 26 x 1.75 tires with aggressive mud treads that are on there now.
