Timo Werner had earlier had one chalked off as a marginal offside call spared Alisson’s blushes after another moment of madness from the Reds goalkeeper.

It means Liverpool have now gone 78 days without an Anfield league victory – the last-gasp 2-1 win over Tottenham which put the champions three points clear at the top.

The result sees Chelsea jump into fourth while putting another major dent in Liverpool’s hopes of securing Champions League football next season.
