Alastair Dawson RIP + Funeral details
A legend of chess in Scotland and a dear friend to many who will be sorely missed.
Go rest high on that mountain, your work on earth is done!
Below is a message from Dundee Chess Club, written by Ray Flood
It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news of the passing of club linchpin and our dearest friend Alastair Dawson. Alastair died on Saturday morning surrounded by his family, after a brief illness which accelerated with shocking speed.
Alastair, like many of us, was a member of both Dundee and Castlehill clubs, and excelled in his playing career, amongst many other things captaining our club A Team to several TAFCA Championships during their current 12 season run, and was also the overall captain and organiser of the Dundee City teams, the A Team of which won the SNCL Championship three times in recent years under his stewardship.
His love of the game always spurred him on to explore and keep improving himself too, and just this season, he boosted his live Scottish grade by 100 points again.
Chess needs organisers too of course, and Alastair has served the club committee in many posts over the years, and is still holding the Presidency of TAFCA. Huge shoes to fill indeed. He was also a fabulous coach, and many young (and not so young) players will testify to his dedication and giving of his time and generosity to their advancement.
