The flight landed at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, but not before making an unexpected collision with a light pole on the adjacent turnpike (via The Mirror). None of the passengers was harmed during the incident, and the plane landed safely just moments later.
An investigation was launched into the reason behind the collision, as no clear faults were reported with the aircraft.
New footage has confirmed that Flight 169 didn't just crash into a light pole, but it also collided with an oncoming truck on the turnpike next to Newark Airport. The driver sustained minor injuries and is currently being treated in the hospital; none of the nearby drivers were injured.
The Boeing 747 was traveling to the United States from Venice, Italy, and displayed no signs of fault during the rest of the flight.
United Airlines' official statement confirmed that the plane “came into contact with a light pole” and "landed safely, taxied to the gate normally, and no passengers or crew were injured."
The airline confirmed that an active investigation is currently underway to evaluate any damage to the aircraft, and the crew have been removed from service to conduct a "rigorous" flight safety evaluation.
