This Nintendo Switch Game Has Quietly Become One of the Best-Selling Titles of All Time

In the long history of video games, several titles have achieved legendary status and sold millions of copies worldwide. Many of those titles have continued to find ongoing success as they have been re-released and updated, allowing more gamers to buy copies. Still, one relatively recently released Nintendo Switch title has become one of the best-selling video games of all time

The Nintendo Switch’s ‘Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe’ Is One of the Best-Selling Video Games of All Time

In February 2025, IGN released an updated ranking of the 10 best-selling video games of all time. Of course, every entry focused on one of the most iconic titles ever released, including Tetris, Minecraft, Super Mario Bros., and more. Some observers may be surprised to learn that Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe also made the cut.

The outlet ranked Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe as the sixth best-selling game of all time, stating it had sold 70.43 million combined on the Nintendo Switch and Wii U. The ranking stipulated that the Wii U version was responsible for roughly 8 million of that total. After that ranking was published, its sales tally went up substantially. In December 2025, Nintendo's website listed Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe as having sold 70.59 million on the Switch alone, making that version of the game enough to hold the sixth spot on IGN's list by itself.

Mario Kart 8 was originally released on the Wii U in 2014. After the Nintendo Switch was launched in March 2017, the title was adapted for the next-generation console. A little over a month later, the upgraded version of the game, Mario Kart 8 + Deluxe, was released on that console, and it became a mammoth success. It is fascinating to know that the eighth iteration of the Mario Kart series is the most successful by far.
