Ford's 1.74-Million-Vehicle Recall Puts It Way Ahead Of Other Brands

0 10

Ford is well on track for another record-breaking year for recalls. This latest recall, covering more than 1.7 million vehicles, is contributing significantly to that. The brand already leads in recalls this year, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). This one concerns backup cameras, following another series of recalls for a similar issue on 1.5 million vehicles back in September, 2025.

The backup camera recalls span between 850,000 and 890,000 units, respectively. The smaller of the two concerns the 2021-2026 Ford Bronco and 2021-2024 Ford Edge, 849,310 of which are subject to the recall. It concerns the brand's Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), which could overheat and shut down. As a result, the rearview camera may not display an image when backing up. That's in violation of a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, which forces Ford to issue a recall. Here, the remedy is updating by a dealer, or through an over-the-air update. Owners will be notified by letter starting on March 30, 2026.

The second covers 2020-2022 Escape, Lincoln Corsair, 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviator, and Explorer SUVs, to the tune of 889,950 recalled units. The image in the center display may flip or invert when in reverse. The resulting incorrectly displayed rearview image also places these vehicles in violation of a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. Ford doesn't have a fix for this one yet, but notification should begin on April 17.

Ford has issued a total of 17 recalls so far this year, which is more than triple the number of recalls issued by Toyota and Hyundai. The two are tied for second place in the overall number of recalls issued so far this year. Each has issued five so far this year, and are closely followed by another tie: BMW and GM, which have each issued four recalls this year. Should Ford stay on pace, it'll be another banner year for recalls at the brand. A few years back, CEO Jim Farley pledged to root out quality control issues and said to expect recalls. However, years later, it seems Ford is either still doing so or has failed to.
