A Timeless Music Performance Was Recorded 34 Years Ago Today
On March 4, 1992, American folk-rock musician Paul Simon recorded an episode of MTV Unplugged that highlighted the biggest hits of his career.
The episode received widespread acclaim from fans, and remains one of the show's most popular episodes.
Paul Simon's 'MTV Unplugged' Was A Celebration of His Career
Typically, MTV Unplugged was a platform for the biggest contemporary stars to perform their new hits and reach a more global audience; fans will remember sets from Nirvana, Oasis, Lauryn Hill, and more. But occassionally, the show gave the stage to older musicians with a more filled-out discography.
Paul Simon was a perfect candidate for this. His career began in the mid-60s as a part of Simon & Garfunkel, and later branched out with solo singles such as "Me and Julio Down By The School Yard" and "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover". Throughout the '80s, he found massive commercial success with Graceland and the several radio hits it produced.
By the '90s, his career had undeniably begun to slow down. He was still massively popular among his established fans, but Simon hadn't released any new music that was charting as highly for many years.
MTV Unplugged came at the perfect time to essentially bring Simon back into the public spotlight and close the most successful chapter of his career with class and charisma. The performance reminded audiences why they'd fallen in love with his music in the first place, with its dense lyrics and simple, charming guitar sounds.
Unlike many other performers, Simon's turn on MTV Unplugged was never officially released as an album—despite the episode's massive popularity. The show is sometimes available to stream on MUBI, although the streamer doesn't house it permanently.
