Nancy Guthrie Update: Neighbor Breaks Silence on 'Suspicious' Man

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood of Tucson, Arizona, on January 31.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department previously stated it believes Guthrie was abducted from her home, which sparked a manhunt for the alleged kidnapper(s) and brought the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the fold. As the case entered its fourth week, though, the investigation hasn't identified a potential suspect, but neighbors are starting to talk.

Nancy Guthrie Neighbor Saw 'Suspicious' Man Before Her Disappearance

Fox News spoke with two people who live in the neighborhood in the Catalina Foothills that revealed police and federal authorities asked about specific dates before Guthrie's disappearance.

Michele Young, a longtime resident of the Catalina Foothills area said investigators came to her house a total of five times, but specifically asked about January 11th.

"On that last visit, when I was talking to the FBI and the sheriff together, they did mention the 11th," Young said. "I had mentioned that the sheriff’s department came back for additional footage, and they mentioned something about a different date."

Another neighbor, Aldine Meister, revealed she saw a "suspicious" man, per Fox News, that "didn't fit" while walking through the neighborhood.

"He didn’t have your typical walking gear on, and he had his hat pulled really far over his eyes," Aldine Meister told Fox News Digital. "...He was kind of younger, and he just didn’t look like he was going out for a walk."

Meister revealed she hadn't encountered the younger man before and didn't initially report the suspicious man to authorities. However, following Guthrie's disappearance, she told police about the man she had seen, though she didn't have video of the encounter.

Meister couldn't say specifically if she witnessed the man on Jan. 11th.

"It could’ve been the 11th," Meister said. She told Fox News Digital that she knew it was after Jan. 8, when she had visitors in town, and at least two weeks before Guthrie’s abduction.

Backpack Found, but Authorities Reveal Dead End

A group of volunteers conducted an informal search not far from Guthrie's home and discovered a backpack that was handed over to authorities.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department later revealed that the backpack found by volunteers does not appear to be a "viable lead," noting that it seems to be a different brand than the one the suspect wore in the doorbell surveillance footage that the FBI previously released.

The backpack also "appears to have been outside for much longer than three weeks" and "contained identification of a minor within it," the sheriff's department said.

Pima County Sheriff's Break Silence on Viral Claim

Several videos on social media started presenting a new claim that body of the 84-year-old had been found floating in a pond.

The videos claim the body was identified as Guthrie’s and further claimed to have found footprints near the water’s edge and suggested “signs of struggle and forceful movement.”

After seeing the viral video, the Pima County Sheriff's Department issued the following statement, “That video is not accurate. It was not taken in our jurisdiction and the officers shown are not Pima county deputies.”
