Netflix Quietly Cancels Show After Just 1 Season Following Name Change

Netflix creates over 700 original programs every year across the globe and while many of its shows produce ratings bonanzas, the streaming platform isn't immune to a few swings and misses.

This year alone the streaming platform with nearly 200 million monthly users has canceled four show, with the latest coming without much fanfare.

Netflix Cancels 'Miss Governor' After Mid-Season Name Change

Netflix's latest cancellation comes after the show went through a mid-season name change. Miss Governor, initially named She The People, has been "effectively canceled" according to a report from What's on Netflix.

"Tyler Perry’s first foray into a comedy series for Netflix has officially reached the end of its term. It’s our understanding that Netflix currently has no plans to renew Miss Governor (formerly known as She The People) for a full second season, effectively canceling the series after a single, two-part run," What's on Netflix reported.

What Is 'Miss Governor'?

The series focuses on Antoinette Dunkerson, played by Terri J. Vaughn, who also served as a creator for the show.

"As she tries to shine in politics, Mississippi's first Black lieutenant governor must manage her zany family and overcome a boss who's stuck in the past," the tagline of the show from Netflix reads.

The show initially debuted as She The People but under went a name change "amid ongoing litigation accusing Tyler Perry and series star and executive producer Terri J. Vaughn of lifting the name of the Netflix comedy from the political nonprofit of the same name," according to a report from The Wrap.

Did Fans Like the Show?

The show was a rare failure for Tyler Perry, who generally delivers significant ratings.

What's on Netflix cited FlixPatrol numbers, which showed the latest offering from Perry posted a solid showing with 79 points across 11 days, peaking at No. 2 in the United States. However, the show missed the weekly global top 10s entirely for both batches of episodes, and according to the Netflix Engagement Reports, drew 35.6M hours watched globally, equating to 8.6M views for the entirety of 2025.

The show received a dismal 4.8 out of 10 stars from users on IMDb and just a 50% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
