Eric Dane Continued Filming 'Euphoria' Season 3 Following his ALS Diagnosis

Eric Dane has died at the age of 53, 10 months after announcing his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND).

The actor died Thursday, February 19, Dane's family told People. "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS," the statement read. "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."

"Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight," the statement continued. "He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Dane was mainly known for his role as Dr. Mark "McSteamy" Sloan on the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, which he starred in from 2006 to 2012. In more recent years, the star received critical acclaim as Cal Jacobs, father of Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) on the HBO teen drama Euphoria, starting in 2019.

The actor returned to film Euphoria Season 3 on April 14 last year, just four days after publicly revealing his ALS diagnosis. The size of his role in the new series is currently unknown, but production wrapped on the upcoming third and final season in November last year.

Previously, Dane teased in an interview with Varietywhat we can expect from his character, a wealthy businessman and proud family patriarch who privately struggles with his sexuality.

"There's gonna be redemption," he told the entertainment outlet. "I mean, that's the trajectory he's on. I can't imagine Cal's life from solitary confinement. It's tough to work Cal into the storyline when he's behind bars."

Dane is sadly not the first actor from Euphoria to tragically pass away. Angus Cloud, who portrayed drug dealer with a heart of gold Fezco "Fez" O'Neill, died from an accidental drug overdose in 2023, at the age of 25.
