‘Today’ Show Makes Security Change Following Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance

0 1

Authorities in the Tucson, Arizona, area are now in their fifth day of continuing the search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie. But more than 2,000 miles across the countries, the situation is causing additional security precautions in New York City as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to the morning show’s production have told the outlet that NBC has increased the amount of security officers and police stationed in and around 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where the long-running show films each morning—much of it playing out right in front of curious bystanders who can look right into the glass studio windows. (In warmer weather, many segments are taped outside the studio, where hundreds of people are mere feet from the show’s hosts and guests.)

The source told THR that the increased security measures were being instituted “out of an abundance of caution,” as the studio’s Rockefeller Center home is an iconic Manhattan landmark that is always teeming with spectators.

Nancy Guthrie’s alleged abduction has reportedly had a very profound effect on Savannah’s Today colleagues, with The Hollywood Reporter writing that, “[T]he Arizona abduction incident impacting Today co-host Savannah Guthrie is understood to have left fellow talent and crews around the NBC weekday mornings show heartbroken, and led to beefed up security measures until Nancy Guthrie is found.”

The tragedy has led to some shakeup in Olympic coverage plans, too. Guthrie was scheduled to head to Italy this week in order to host the opening ceremony of the XXV Winter Olympic Games; veteran sportscaster Mary Carillo has been tapped to take her place.

Guthrie’s Today co-star Craig Melvin was also scheduled to be at Milano Cortina 2026 in order to provide late-night coverage. In a show of support for his colleague, Melvin, too, opted to remain in the U.S. while the search for Nancy continues. NBC Sports reporter Ahmed Fareed will fill in for Melvin.

What Is the Latest on the Search for Nancy Guthrie?

Despite being in its fifth day, the information surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance continues to change as new information is discovered and some tips are ruled out.

So far, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that the 84-year-old was most likely “taken against her will.” DNA testing has confirmed that blood evidence discovered on the porch belonged to Nancy.

Though Nancy did have a doorbell camera, that was reportedly disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on Sunday, February 1st. And while there is no imagery, the software has detected that a person was present in the home at 2:12 a.m.—less than 30 minutes later. The app that monitors Nancy’s pacemaker was disconnected at 2:28 a.m.

The FBI is offering $50,000 for any information that leads to her recovery.
