Savannah Guthrie Breaks Silence on Search for Missing Mother, 84, After Absence From 'Today Show'

Savannah Guthrie has broken her silence regarding the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother. The veteran Today Show anchor was absent for the Monday, Feb. 2, episode of NBC’s flagship morning show, but she issued a statement to the program amidst her family’s ongoing search.

Nancy Guthrie Went Missing on Jan. 31

Nancy Guthrie, 84, reportedly vanished from her home in Arizona’s Catalina Foothills, just outside of Tucson, between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. local time on Saturday, Jan. 31. At a press conference on Sunday, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters that officers found “concerning evidence” at the scene. He confirmed that foul play has not been ruled out. Drones, aircraft, and dog teams, some of which were borrowed from Customs and Border Protection forces, are aiding in the ongoing search.

“This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found and located just by looking at the scene,” Nanos said, without providing details of what was found. “We hope we find her safe and sound, but we are very concerned.” Due to her age, Nancy has been labeled a “vulnerable adult.” However, Nanos reported that “she has no cognitive issues at all” and is “very alert [and] of sound mind.” “I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us," he said.

Savannah Guthrie Addressed the Disappearance on Today

On Monday, Today hosts Sheinelle Jones and Craig Melvin covered the “deeply personal story” and shared a statement from their co-anchor. “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support,” Guthrie’s statement read. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.”

Homicide Detectives Have Reportedly Joined Investigation

On Monday, it was reported that homicide officers have joined the investigation. Tom Winter, a crime correspondent with NBC, joined Jones and Melvin to dissect Nanos’ remarks. “What they found there led them to this point where they thought this was something that required their urgent attention,” Winter said. “They were able to get out helicopters last night that use infrared cameras. They’ve got drones up. They’ve enlisted the help of the Customs and Border Protection—obviously, not too far from the border there in Mexico. They have some special resources. The FBI is also aware of this case, as well.”

Nancy is described as being five feet five inches tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. She has appeared several times with her daughter on The Today Show, most recently in a November 2025 segment profiling Guthrie’s hometown of Tucson.
