You Can Stream This Ultra-Rare George Clooney Show on Netflix Right Now
Last year, George Clooney made his Broadway debut. The limited-run production commanded some of the highest ticket prices in Broadway history, with seats regularly going for $500 or more throughout its run. As such, most fans were never able to see it. Beginning today, however, that has changed.
Broadway's Good Night, and Good Luck Is Now Streaming on Netflix
Good Night, and Good Luck: Live from Broadway is a filmed version of the Jay Kelly star’s stage debut, which premiered in New York last year. Clooney played Edward R. Murrow in the play, which is based upon the 2005 film of the same name which Clooney directed. Murrow was the veteran CBS broadcaster who famously stood up to Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare of the 1950s. David Stathairn played Morrow in the film, alongside a star-studded supporting cast which included Patricia Clarkson; Robert Downey Jr.; and Clooney as Murrow’s producer Fred Friendly.
“Set in 1953, the play chronicles the real-life conflict between Murrow and Senator McCarthy. As McCarthy leads a witch hunt to root out alleged Communists in the government and media, Murrow and his dedicated team of journalists decide to take a stand, using their broadcast platform to expose the Senator’s fear-mongering tactics despite immense corporate and political pressure,” reads Netflix’s official synopsis for the play.
'About These Recurrences We Go Through in Government'
Clooney said in an interview opposite Broadway star Patti LuPone for Variety that he was moved to revisit the material given the parallels in modern American politics. “I’m passionate about it because this play is not just about 1954. It’s about these recurrences that we go through in our government,” the Out of Sight star explained. “There’s this feeling that we’re part of a conversation that the audience really wants to have. You can feel everybody leaning forward. Edward R. Murrow was us at our best. He was the first guy into the death camps. He was standing on the roof during the bombings of London. And he delivered us the truth, even as he was risking his life or risking his career.”
Good Night, and Good Luck’s Netflix premiere follows the play’s television premiere on CNN and a brief streaming run on HBO Max, which Netflix’s website is quick to point out will “soon to be under Netflix’s wing if the acquisition completes.” Indie distributor Magnolia Pictures is handling the digital distribution rights for the play it describes as “a taut historical drama about the responsibility of journalism in the face of political tyranny.”
The cast for the stage show was nearly as star-studded as the film’s cast. In addition to Clooney in the lead role, supporting cast members included Christopher Denham (Brightburn), Ilana Glazer (Broad City), and Clark Gregg (The Avengers).
The production earned five Tony nominations in 2025, including Best Actor in a Play for George Clooney, as well as Best Scenic Design in a Play, Best Lighting Design in a Play, Best Costume Design in a Play, and Best Sound Design in a Play. Clooney ultimately lost to Cole Escola's madcap Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh Mary!, while Stranger Things: First Shadow and The Picture of Dorian Gray took home the technical awards.
