Winter Storm Warning Announced as 39 Inches of Snow, 'Hazardous' Winds Threaten
The Riverton, WY office of the National Weather Service is calling for dangerous weather to hit the area in the coming days. A winter storm warning is in effect through early Monday morning as heavy snowfall and dangerous winds draw near.
"Increasing chances for snow across western portions this evening, becoming likely before midnight with moderate to heavy snow in the mountains. Snowfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches in Jackson/Star Valleys possible tonight," the weather alert said.
"Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph expected over South Pass/Red Canyon this afternoon, with gusts over 60 mph expected overnight tonight. There is a 30 to 50% chance for 60+ mph wind gusts over the south side of Casper tonight."
The "hazardous" weather outlook was for much of Western and Central Wyoming.
Wind River Range Expecting Heavy Snowfall
The Riverton office of the National Weather Service revealed heavy snowfall is expected in the Wind River Range in Wyoming. As most of the state battles "hazardous" winds, the mountain range is expected to received more than three feet of snow - with 10 inches falling on Saturday night alone.
"Snow showers, mainly after 11pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 18. Windy, with a southwest wind 17 to 22 mph increasing to 24 to 29 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible," the forecast said.
As much as 29 inches of snow could fall on Sunday.
" Snow showers. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 21. Wind chill values as low as zero. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 20 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible," the forecast said.
Meanwhile, the forecast for Sunday night read, "Snow showers. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 14. Wind chill values as low as zero. Breezy, with a west southwest wind around 22 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 10 to 16 inches possible."
