Winter Storm Warning Issued for up to 24 Inches of Snow, Hazardous Conditions

0 0

The recent stretch of foul winter weather that has wreaked havoc across the United States will continue today into Friday in some areas of the country, including Montana.

Early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service issued a pair of "Winter Storm Warnings" for Montana, projecting up to two feet of snow and severe winds that could make travel or other activities near impossible.

'Hazardous conditions' expected

The NWS Missoula office announced today that an atmospheric river will bring "significant mountain snow" today and tomorrow. As a result, a "Winter Storm Warning" is in effect for the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains--from Lolo Pass and Highway 93 Sula to Lost Trail Pass--for 5 p.m. Thursday through 5 p.m. local time Friday.

"There is a likelihood of major winter weather impacts to isolated extreme winter storm impacts," the NWS said. "Total snow accumulations between 8 to 14 inches for Lolo Pass and 16 to 24 inches for Lost Trail Pass. Winds gusting between 35 and 45 mph."

The NWS also says to expect "considerable disruptions to normal activities" and "dangerous or impossible traveling conditions." Residents are recommended to delay all travel or drive with extreme caution if absolutely necessary.

"The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes, especially over higher passes," the warning adds. "Gusty winds could bring down tree branches, leading to power outages."

Up to 2 feet of snow also expected in other areas

The NWS Billings outpost also put out its own "Winter Storm Warning" Thursday for the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains from 11 a.m. today until 5 a.m. Saturday.

Periods of heavy snow are forecasted, with totals reaching up to two feet. Winds may reach as high as 75 mph, putting a wrench in the plans of anyone planning on doing some hiking or other outdoor activity.

"Recreation in the high country will be impacted by heavy accumulating snow and blowing snow. Avalanche danger will increase," the NWS said. "Be prepared for difficult winter conditions if you have plans in the backcountry."

More bad weather could be on its way

Earlier this week, Jeff Berardelli, Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist at WFLA-TV warned that parts of the country could receive up to 10 feet of snow in the coming days, and named Montana as one of the states that will be heavily impacted.

"“Epic snowfall in the Pacific NW!! Over the next 10 days, up to 10 feet will pile up on the higher terrain of British Columbia and Washington. Then another several feet in the 10-15 day period. And it doesn’t stop there. Oregon, Montana, Wyoming, N Cali too!” Berardelli said on X/Twitter.
