Toyota Recalls 170,000 Trucks And SUVs For Failing Engines

0 15

Toyota's twin-turbo V6 engine, found in models like the Tundra and Lexus GX, continues to prove problematic. The manufacturer was pushed to issue a recall last July, covering replacements for engines in the Lexus GX and Toyota Tundra due to failures. Now, Toyota is forced to expand that recall by another 127,000 units, all built between December 2022 and February 2024.

Toyota Expands Engine Recall

Toyota's recall now includes 2022-2024 Toyota Tundras and Lexus LXs, and 2024 Lexus GX SUVs. The recall now totals more than 200,000 affected vehicles, but it's worth noting the recall only expands to certain gas-powered models. At this time, additional hybrid-powered Toyotas, which also use a version of this V6, have not been recalled.

Toyota initially issued the recall last year because of debris in the engines. These vehicles are equipped with Toyota's V35A V6. Inside, the engine's crankshaft main bearing allows the engine's crank to rotate during operation. However, in production, "during a specific period," there was a possibility that engine machining debris could have entered the then-unfinished engines. Any debris inside an engine can be catastrophic, causing premature wear and even engine failures. That's what could happen, here, says Toyota.

For the recalled vehicles, the pressure on the main bearings is such that, if the machining debris adheres to the bearings and the operation of the engine continues at higher loads, for example, while accelerating hard or towing, these crankshaft bearings can fail. The result is effectively a new engine. Vehicles can stall or fail to start, and in some cases, lose power and conk out while driving. Luckily, the defect is few and far between, with Toyota estimating around 1 percent of vehicles actually suffering from the issue.

Toyota's Recall Expands

In an announcement, Toyota said that it is "currently developing the remedy for this issue" and encouraged owners to head to Toyota and Lexus' websites to check and see if their vehicles are subject to recalls. While Toyota is still developing a remedy, it's very likely Toyota will offer some sort of engine replacement program as it did in the past. Hopefully, Toyota will have found a way to inspect for the debris without having to tear down engines. That could be difficult, given just how buried within the bowels of the engine the crankshaft is. For now, Toyota says that "customers will be notified about this issue by early January 2026."
