Wild Video Shows Massive Bridge Collapse Months After Opening
Well, that seemed like a waste of time and money.
A 2,486-foot-long bridge in China's southwestern Sichuan province collapsed on Tuesday just months after a years-long construction of the Hongqi Bridge had been completed.
Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities, as local police had closed the bridge in anticipation of a possible collapse. According to local reports, authorities closed off access to the bridge due to cracks on nearby slopes and roads. Shifts in the terrain also led officials to close off the bridge.
In fact, the terrain on the mountainside worsened by Tuesday, triggering landslides before the bridge finally collapsed.
The 758‑meter Hongqi Bridge in Maerkang, Sichuan, collapsed months after opening due to cracks and shifting slopes. No casualties were reported. Authorities are investigating and inspecting nearby infrastructure.
