Ford's New F-150 Raptor Is The King Of The V8 Dinosaurs

0 4

The F-150 Raptor R is already an utterly insane, largely superfluous take on the sensible F-150 work truck. It's got a huge 700+ horsepower V8 and absolutely no reason to exist. It's a dinosaur. But dinosaurs are cool, and big ones are even cooler. Enter: the F-150 Raptor R Project Vehicle. It's effectively a showcase for Ford's Performance Parts division, with the host of updates netting a hilarious 900+ horsepower from the truck.

The project is on display this week at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas alongside a souped-up Maverick. While that truck is intended for consumer use, this is more of an exhibition. Ford used its performance parts bin to amp up the F-150 Raptor R, calling it the "next evolution of off-road dominance." The 3.0-liter supercharger is so massive it out-displaces that same Maverick's entire engine by 33 percent. Its implementation nets another 180 horses over the R's standard 720 horsepower. Ford didn't provide torque figures, but "more" is a safe bet.

Ford is still deciding whether it'd like to sell this kind of power to the public, calling it a "potential Ford Performance Parts" upgrade package. These parts do come with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty, just in case that huge supercharger does pop the surely expensive motor.

The Power Is Forbidden Fruit, But Other Parts Aren't

Ford showcased further parts for the Raptor R on its project, including a gloss carbon fiber package and a Borla cat-back exhaust with black chrome tips that's surely loud as all get-out. There's also a full set of Rigid off-road auxiliary lights, complemented by white underbody rock lights and a set of METHOD Black wheels.

"We wanted to create a blueprint for the ultimate factory-backed Raptor, combining immense power with the rugged capability that the name implies. This is for the enthusiast who looks at the F-150 Raptor R and says, 'How can we take it further?’,” said Matt Simpson, Executive Director of Accessories and Personalization. For now, the truck remains "for demonstration purposes," says Ford.
