Bruce Willis’s Wife Reveals Their Children ‘Grieve’ Amid His Dementia Battle
It's been almost three years since Bruce Willis stepped away from acting after revealing he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Since then, his wife, Emma Heming Willis, has been open about their family struggles and shares an update about their children.
The couple has two daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, who Heming Willis says are taking things in stride despite its difficulties.
"I think they’re doing well, all things considered. But it’s hard. They grieve. They miss their dad so much. He’s missing important milestones. That’s tough for them," she said in an interview with Vogue Australia.
"But kids are resilient. [Although] I used to hate hearing that because people didn’t understand what we were walking through. I don’t know if my kids will ever bounce back. But they’re learning, and so am I," she added.
Hemming Willis has made it her mission to be public about the battles of FTD and how it's affected her and the actor. Advocating for caregivers, she's written a book, The Unexpected Journey, based on her experience
She's also stood by her tough decision to move the actor into his own home, fitted to his medical needs. At one point, she even considered divorcing the actor.
"I’ve had to learn to walk alongside the grief," she revealed. "It’s always with me. I can’t shake it, but I'm going to breathe, and I'm going to be sad and all the feelings and emotions that I’m going to feel, but I am also not going to just allow it to be this one note of that."
Despite the challenges of Willis's dementia and learning to hold onto precious moments, Heming Willis says, "it could still be so much worse."
When it comes to an update on the actor, she says, “Bruce [is] still laughing and smiling and has that twinkle. There are just beautiful moments that exist. And I don’t want people to dismiss that, to know that we still have joy and we still have laughter in our lives with Bruce."
