Astonishing events at Barrow upon Soar

0 5
Little did I know that a moonlight paddle on the humble Soar could end up being so wonderous!
Ictoaun (Martin) Jewels666 (Juliet) Cankay (Kaptain Slow) & myself decided to do an overnighter at Barrow which was to include a moonlit paddle on the Quorn loop...….Provided the moon played ball...…...and it did.

After a short portage and the usual faff we set off on the short leg down the portage point to get us onto the Quorn loop.
There are two ways down to this section, a short portage or, if you are confident, you can shoot the steep multi-stepped weir.
This is where the fun started, Jon & Juliet missed the portage point and accidently shot the weir instead! Astonishingly they landed in the pool below completely unscathed. For once I had my camera on me to document it!
After this excitement we set off on the loop. About half a mile in we started to hear some fairly substantial splashing sounds. We crept along as quietly as we could and we were rewarded with the sighting of what looked like a family of giant rats (which I later found out we actually Capyvara) galivanting all over the river. We sat there in silence for about 15 minutes watching their skilful play, until Martin sneezed and quick as a flash they were gone.

I thought that was the excitement over for the evening, however as we enjoyed a short tea break , the most surprising incident of the night.
Juliet, who has been receiving some solo coaching, jumped in the silverbirch…….paddled over to a 4ft standing wave and began to surf!!!......at one point even standing up! Bravo Juliet! Me, Martin & Jon could only watch in admiration.
Well that was it really …...we headed back to base...….got the fire going...….and kicked back.
But it took a fair few Malibu's before I could calm down. I'm just pleased to have had my camera on me to get it on film. Pics below
